Social Media & Startups // Guest Post

Guest post by student, Paige T. // Business Foundations class, Fall 2017

Social media can be “gold” for startups. Companies can use a wide variety of social media platforms including popular ones like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat… often at little to no cost! Social media allows the company to show what they do or sell, what their company is all about, and why people would want to buy something from the company. They can share pictures of the products or services their are selling, connecting with potential consumers in an effort to bring customers in.

Social media can be a great thing to expand businesses, but companies must be very careful about what they push out. Every tweet, post, or story should be appropriate and represent the company in a good way. If something inappropriate is posted, the company may be talked about in a negative way and they may lose customers.

Social media is a great way to communicate with customers and also other companies. Businesses can work with other companies and post things about their collaboration. Lori Ruff says, “Social media is here.  It’s not going away; not a passing fad.  Be where your customers are: in social media.” Ruff expresses the importance of businesses using social media.  Matt Goulart says, “Social media is about the people!  Not about your business. Provide for the people and the people will provide you.” Goulart explains the use of social media by businesses and how it benefits them. Beware of sounding too “sales-pitchy” and make sure your content tells a story about your company… one your potential customers can’t get enough of!
